UNITED NATIONS: UN experts say the Daesh extremist group still poses 鈥渁 significant and evolving threat around the world鈥� despite recent setbacks in Iraq, Syria and the southern Philippines that forced the militants to relinquish strongholds.
The report to the Security Council circulated Tuesday said Daesh 鈥渉as lost its focus on conquering and holding territory鈥� but is continuing 鈥渢o give prominence to external attacks.鈥�
The experts said the extremist group is now organized 鈥渁s a global network鈥� with 鈥渓ess operational control over its affiliates鈥� and some members reportedly willing to work with Al-Qaeda networks 鈥渢o support one another鈥檚 attacks.鈥�
As a result, the fight against Daesh militants is entering a new phase with more focus on 鈥渓ess visible networks of individuals and cells acting with a degree of autonomy.鈥�
